Road repairs in Belarus continue uninterrupted after EBRD funding cutoff

04.05.2023
KALINKOVICHI DISTRICT, 4 May (BelTA) – After the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) cut off funding for work at 13 sites of the Belarusian transport infrastructure, the work continued anyway. Belarusian First Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Aleksei Lyakhnovich pointed it out as a section of the M10 motorway was reopened to traffic, BelTA has learned. The section is located in Kalinkovichi District, Gomel Oblast. Overpasses over railways and a bridge had been reconstructed in this section.

Aleksei Lyakhnovich noted that the necessary money had been found after the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development stopped financing the projects. The official thanked the country’s president and the government for keeping the work at the sites going.

Some of the transport infrastructure facilities were commissioned last year. “We will commission another five this year, including two in Gomel Oblast,” Aleksei Lyakhnovich clarified.

In his words, there are plans to perform routine repairs and capital repairs on over 2,000km of automobile roads in Belarus this year. Including 270km of roads in Gomel Oblast, the official noted.

“Last year we commissioned 80 bridge structures after capital repairs, routine repairs, and reconstruction. We are working on another 113 structures this year,” he added.
